How a Mississauga studio is making inroads in GTA gift hampers

Velvéa · 5 min read · October 29, 2026

There is no shortage of places to buy a gift hamper in the GTA. National websites ship them from warehouses, florists add a box of chocolates to a bouquet, and every December the grocery stores stack pre-wrapped baskets by the door. When Velvéa opened its studio on Hurontario Street in Mississauga in 2026, we knew we weren't going to out-shout any of them. So we set out to do a few things properly and let the baskets speak for themselves.

A few months in, here is what that looks like, and what people have told us so far.

Packed by hand, after you order

None of our baskets sit on a shelf waiting for a buyer. Each one is put together in the studio once the order comes in, wrapped by hand and checked against the photo on the site, so what arrives is what you chose. It is slower than pulling a box from a warehouse rack, and that is the point. A gift that arrives with a crushed bow or a missing item says the wrong thing, however much it cost.

The range has grown to 38 baskets, from a $59 Diwali hamper to a $499 gentleman's box, with birthday, new baby, Thanksgiving, self-care and corporate gifts in between. We fill them with brands people already know and like, many of them Canadian: Kicking Horse coffee from British Columbia, Purdys chocolates from Vancouver, Neal Brothers snacks from Ontario. We don't sell alcohol, which turns out to suit a lot of gifting in this city. A hamper for a client, a grandparent or a family celebrating Diwali can go to anyone without a second thought.

Our own drivers, and same-day across the GTA

This is where we think we have made the most ground. Orders around the GTA are not handed to a courier. We drive them ourselves, which is what makes same-day delivery possible for a gift that has to arrive today.

Order before noon Eastern and the basket goes out the same day, anywhere in Mississauga, Toronto, Brampton, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Georgetown, Bolton, Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill. Delivery is $9.99 in Mississauga and $14.99 further out, because of the drive. Order before 7 pm and most baskets arrive the next day; bouquets and a few flower baskets need two days. Durham and the northern edge of the GTA have no same-day run, but get next-day delivery on the same terms. On weekdays, same-day orders arrive in the evening, between 7 and 11 pm, when most people are home to answer the door. On weekends we deliver through the day.

We also cap how many local deliveries we take each day. Once a day is full, checkout offers the next open one instead of promising something we can't keep. You can check your own area on our delivery page, city by city.

Beyond the GTA: shipping across Canada

A lot of people in the GTA have family in other provinces, and a gift for them should not need a second shop. So baskets that travel well now ship by tracked courier across the rest of Ontario, the Atlantic provinces, the Prairies and British Columbia, with Quebec coming soon. Shipping starts at $28.99 within Ontario, and the exact price for any address appears at checkout as soon as you enter the postal code. Anything fresh, chilled or likely to melt stays local, and checkout tells you before you pay rather than after. The details are on our shipping page.

Working with local makers

Part of growing here is working with other small businesses that are doing the same. This autumn we started adding hand-poured candles from INARA in Milton to our corporate gifts, and we are talking to more Ontario makers about chocolate, tea and skincare. If you make something that belongs in a gift basket, our partners page explains what we look for.

Corporate gifts and custom requests

We also work with businesses: realtors sending closing gifts, offices thanking clients, teams marking the end of the year. For those we offer volume pricing from ten baskets, branded cards and delivery to several addresses at once. A corporate quote request gets a reply within one business day. For a one-off, you can also send us a list of the products you'd like and we will arrange them into a basket in our own style, with a price agreed first.

What customers are saying

We are new, and we don't pretend otherwise. But the early response has been good. Our Google reviews stand at 5.0 from our first seven, and one customer who sent the Birthday Chocolate Bloom Box put it this way:

"The packaging was beautiful, everything was arranged so nicely, and it made the gift feel extra special. Really happy with my purchase. Would definitely recommend Velvea for gifting!"

Reviews like that matter more to a small business than any advert. If we have delivered a gift for you, we would be grateful if you left one on Google too.

What comes next

Over the coming months we will open shipping to Quebec, add more local makers, and keep refining the baskets people order most. The plan hasn't changed: a gift that looks as good on the doorstep as it did on the screen, delivered when it was promised.
